Description

This 2010 release was recorded live during a festival concert held at the Conventual Franciscans Church in Regensburg in 2006 the memorial year of the 300th birthday of Giovanni Battista Padre Martini, that great teacher, historian and composer who worked in Bologna (Italy). In addition to religious vocal music the CD presents two of Martini's instrumental concertos (for two oboes, violoncello and string orchestra with trumpets the second concerto is for harpsichord and orchestra). Two leading and experienced early music ensembles were chosen to perform these works: L'arpa festante and ensemble cantissimo. Markus Utz conducts the vocal works, Norbert D chtel conducts the concertos. Ars Musici.

Giovanni Battista Martini is perhaps best known today less for his music, which is rarely recorded, than for his role as teacher to some of the most celebrated musicians of the eighteenth century, among which could be found composers of the stature of W.A. Mozart, J.C. Bach, and Niccolo Jommelli. In his time Martini was an important music theorist and learned contrapuntist. The few recordings devoted to his sacred music usually feature those Martini composed in a polyphonic style, and which provide ample testimony to his mastery of strict counterpoint. It is a delight to discover, through this recording, those of the composer's choral works that are written in a more spirited, concertato vein. Similarly, the concertos--one, for harpsichord, the other for oboe, cello and trumpet--crackle with energy and melodic grace. L'arpa festante's enthusiasm for these works is infectious. The one drawback to this re-issue is the absence of liner notes in English, as they are provided only in German and Italian.
